\Pon"tiff\, n. [F. pontife, L. pontifex, -ficis; pons,
pontis, a bridge (perhaps originally, a way, path) + facere

A high priest. Especially:
(a) One of the sacred college, in ancient Rome, which had the
supreme jurisdiction over all matters of religion, at the
