Paraph In Webster's Dictionary

\Par"aph\, n. [F. paraphe, parafe, contr. fr. paragraphe.] A flourish made with the pen at the end of a signature. In the Middle Ages, this formed a sort of rude safeguard against forgery. --Brande & C.
